So what's with this distaste for popular music? What's up with kids listening to all these bands that no one gives a shit about; bands that can't even get the time of day from a producer-executive? Suddenly failure is in! Didn't you get the memo? Invest in pimple-faced guys no one likes! They're the new Nike, Adidas, pornographic blowup doll! Remember the days when The Beatles were better than Jesus? Yeah me neither. But the fact is that they were. We'll trust the history book on this one, no 30-page proofs needed (it occurs to me that math classes and physics classes would only take a fraction of the time if everyone just decided to nod and believe the professor). So how come The Beatles are still gods and sons of guns while Britney Spears, the almighty princess of pop, is forgotten as soon as she starts scheduling appointments for tummy tucks? How come Britney Spears is an airhead (or rather, how come so many people like airheads), but John Lennon is 'deep?' Will Hanson ever get over their gay long hair and figure out that no one knows anymore words to "Mmbop" other than "Mmbop?" But I digress. What I am trying to say is why is it that popular music now is monopolized by flabby-assed blonde chicks who lip sync along to words they don't even write while popular music used to be monopolized by musical geniuses like The Beatles? Is the human race retrograding? Is the advent of flavored lip gloss slowly poisoning our youth? Or maybe our education system now sucks so much that the only words that really ever strike home are meaningless lyrics like "Mmbop?" I can imagine girls sitting around a coffee table, short little jean miniskirts showing a good length of leg, compacts gleaming in the sun. "So," drawls one girl, "I totally don't get what 'Mmbop' means, but, like, I totally love that song." And another girl pipes in, "OMG! I don't understand it either!" And then the first girl squeals and says, "We must be, like, soulmates!" Ah, bonding over music.

For a minute there I was confused as to just what your argument was. I thought it was supposed to be a counter-attack... but if I gather correctly... In my opinion, all music has been debased to such levels. I don't really keep up with music that's popular among the teenage population. But there seems to be separate movements. There's that crowd that likes whatever in MTV (or whatever the kids watch) and there's kids who are falling back to bands like the Beatles, Queen, etc (older stuff)... because it makes them seem like their above the former crowd... but in my opinion they're all the same. What we listen to should not define who we are. People just try too hard. I know what I said above makes no sense at all. Oh well.... I'll agree... we've lost something.

I do have a feeling that America is becoming dumber... it's weird. Like the NYstate standardized tests seem ridicously easy but why do so many kids do so poorly? it's like standards have dropped so kids can pass but kids are actually more stupid than the older generations. And then you look at statistics about how America's scores are way below Finland's, Japan's, Hong Kong's etc. and it's crazy. Apparently we're a great world power but we're idiots, or at least, the future adults of America will be idiots. And about music, I think people are so dumb that they don't listen to the lyrics but to the melody, so basically a song can have the crappiest lyrics ever but have the coolest melody and be a hit. Ah, sorry for the long comment... hehe.
